David Wilson was born in Manchester, the youngest of three children. After joining the Metropolitan Police in the early 1980s, he served as a detective in inner-city London before returning to Greater Manchester Police, where he worked in Salford and Moss Side. His career included roles in the CID, public order operations, firearms, and counter-terrorism, earning him several commendations for bravery.

His debut novel When a Red Light Shines reached #1 on the Amazon Kindle store on its original release in 2012.
